House in Sai Kung: A Tranquil and Stylish Remodel

Creating a Spacious and Unique Residential Space

Peacefully nestled in the plentiful hills of Sai Kung, the House in Sai Kung is a completely remodeled residence that offers a spacious, stylish, and tranquil living space for its owners. Designed by Michael Liu, this residential space stands out with its unique glass garage, inspired by the client's car collecting hobby.

One of the major challenges of split-level homes is the division of space into separate areas, making it difficult to connect and utilize effectively. To overcome this limitation, Liu demolished the original structure and completely remodeled the house, optimizing and harmonizing the use of space as both a comfortable home and a welcoming hub for social gatherings.

The four-story house spans 4550 sqft and features a range of carefully designed spaces. It includes a garage, a large living room, a family room, two small ensuite bedrooms, two guestrooms with a shared bathroom, a helper room, a master ensuite bedroom with a walk-in closet and den, as well as an open rooftop sitting area. The design ensures that every aspect of the house is functional and practical.

The House in Sai Kung showcases innovative design elements that enhance both the visual and ambient aspects of the interior space. By lowering the house below ground level, Liu creates a contemporary and stylish "raised" glass garage that can be viewed from the living room. The fully equipped open kitchen is cleverly extended downwards, creating a clutter-free design while fitting out all the essentials. The dining table is hidden at floor level and can be elevated when required, further enhancing space usage.

Completed in Hong Kong, this design project met the situational and functional needs of the owners while working within a limited budget. The transformation of the original split-level layout into more practical and usable full levels, with proper divisions as preferred by the owners, showcases the creative thinking and problem-solving skills of Michael Liu.

The House in Sai Kung has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This prestigious award acknowledges the incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
